Academic Selection of EAMSC Taiwan

Academic Selection of the 29th East Asian Medical Students Conference (EAMSC) Taiwan 2016 is an annual programme organized by Asian Medical Students Association (AMSA Malaysia). With this year’s theme of Medical Care in The Future: When Medical and Technology Meet Humanity, is aimed to elect highly potential medical students with outstanding performances centered in scientific medical research. Of which, they will be able to represent Malaysia in next year’s EAMSC in Taiwan.

The event was held on 28th November 2015 at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Participations are from AMSA representatives from universities all over Malaysia for instance Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Univerisiti Putra Malaysia, International Medical University (IMU), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Monash University. In order to make sure the best of the best is being chosen to represent AMSA Malaysia, we had invited 3 professional specialists to attend the selection as judges, they are Prof Dr Srijit Das (Anatomist), Dr Law Zhe Kang (Neurologist), and Dr Hizlinda Tohid (Family Medicine Specialist). Not to forget, it was our honour that our doctor advisor of AMSA Malaysia, Dr Anizah Ali (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) had attended to officiate the selection.

Free 2 Breathe Run

Since November is International Lung month, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), AMSA board decided to organize a 5km run to instill awareness among students of UMS. The run was held on 28th November 2015. Besides run, we also decided to invite authorities from Queen Elizabeth Hospital to provide blood donation service and medical checkup.

The event started at 7.30am for walk in registration while the participants that have already registered online have to present themselves to the counter for head count. At 8am, VIP Mr Effendy Hadis arrived at DKP13 and the national anthem, Sabah state anthem and UMS anthem were played. After giving speech, Mr Effendy officiated the opening ceremony for Free 2 Breathe Run. At 9am, the participants gathered in front of DKP for the aerobic session. The race started at 9.15am and ended at 10am.

After the run, participants were asked to stay in the hall for smoking talk and the award ceremony. Smoking talk was conducted by Ms Shalini, she is a pharmacist from Luyang Health Clinic. The talk was about the chemical contents in one cigarette smoke, why people smoke, how smoking affect people and the ways to stop smoking. After the talk, there was a small quiz and those who managed to answer the quizzes were given some gifts. Award ceremony followed after the quiz. Only top 10 finisher of the run were awarded. Then the participants were allowed to walk around the hall for medical checkups and also to see some exhibition set up by our own students and also from the other faculty. The event ended at 12pm.

AMSA UPM Diabetes Day

Diabetes Day 2015 which was held on 22nd November 2015 is an idea that originated from the celebration of World Diabetes Day.

World Diabetes Day is an international awareness campaign on diabetes that is conducted
annually on 14th November. This campaign is introduced by International Diabetes
Federation and World Health Organisation (WHO) to increase awareness among people on
diabetes.

The theme of AMSA UPM Diabetes Day 2015 is Choice, Chance, Change. This theme tells
us that a person has the choice to grab a chance to change his/her lifestyle in order to avoid or reduce the percentage of being affected by diabetes. One of the ways is by participating in this programme. Besides, AMSA UPM Diabetes Day 2015 is conducted to increase the awareness among people about healthy living and lifestyle to avoid diabetes.

Story Writing Competition and Exhibition, Health Screening and Diabetes Run were the
main activities of this programme. Story Writing Competition was an essay writing
competition, providing platform for writers to show their talent and enhance their knowledge on diabetes. Apart from that, various health exhibitions and game stations were set up throughout the programme.

Diabetes Run
Diabetes Run was conducted around UPM. Participants were required to run for 6.5 km.
There were 7 categories for this run: Male (13 to 18 years old), Male (19 to 44 years old),
Female (13 to 18 years old), Female (19 to 44 years old), Male and Female (45 years old and above), Buddy and Group Promotion (10 people per group). Approximately, 590 participants took part in this run. They were provided with participants’ T-shirt, goodie bags and bibs. 10% of the profit which was collected through this event will be donated to Malaysian Diabetes Association: Diabetes Malaysia (DM).

Health Screening
Health screening was conducted by clinical medical students while health consultation was conducted by consultant doctors from UPM in Dewan Besar PKSSAS. BMI, blood pressure, waist:hip ratio, lung function test, random blood glucose test, eye test were held. This event receive a good response from the public.

Story Writing Competition and Health Exhibition
Story Writing competition was held from 1st July 2015 to 1st November 2015. 40 participants took part in this competition. There were two categories for this competition: High school students (13 to 17 years old) and Public/University. Participants’ fee was not collected. Health exhibition was conducted on the day of event in Dewan Besar PKSSAS.
Approximately, 700 participants visited the exhibition. Ten booths of game stations were set up to enhance the knowledge of people on diabetes. Posters that were used for health
exhibition were contributed by Malaysian Diabetes Association: Diabetes Malaysia (DM)
whereas Alimentary System model was borrowed from Anatomy Museum of Faculty of
Medicine and Health Sciences UPM.

In summary, the three main activities of AMSA UPM Diabetes Day 2015 were well received by the public. The main objectives of this programme which are to educate and raise awareness among people on diabetes were achieved.

Post- Asian Medical Students’ Conference

The post-AMSC programme was carried out by International Medical University (IMU) on the 10th of October 2015 following the successful AMSC Singapore which was held with the theme, “Geriatric Medicine : Embracing the Silver Tsunami”. The event was attended by 162 students.

Two talks were given on the day. One was “Health Services for Older Person” which was given by Associate Professor Dr Tan Mow Pin who is a Consultant Geriatrician at the Univarsiti Malaya Medical Centre. The next talk was given by Dr Elizabeth Chong, Geriatrician at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur on “Ageing Successfully”.

Next, the UPM team who won the first runner up at the scientific paper competition at AMSC Singapore presented their paper entitled “Female Sexual Dysfunction among Elderly Women in Malaysia”.

The event was wrapped up after a roundtable discussion, AMSA-UPM Diabetes Day announcement and certificate distribution.

Post Conference Seminar for EAMSC Japan and AMSC Philippines

Guys and girls, Monash will be organising a post conference seminar for EAMSC Japan and AMSC Philippines on the 11th and 12th May in Monash University Sunway Campus! The theme of the post conference will be on health inequalities and disaster medicine. There will be lots of interesting, interactive and educational activities throughout the span of the two days including keynote lectures, workshops, movie night, and of course our highlight – the AMAZING RACE: medicine edition!
